Duyung Promo, Aliff Aziz & APM2008 Info…

I just got home from the abovementioned event held at Downtown East Atrium. Had actually planned to go to the one at Causeway Point yesterday and watched the film as well, but house chores held me back since I’m the only one doing it now while Aida has her well-deserved rest. Alhamdulillah everything is fine, Syadiyah is doing well, Syahindah is loving her to bits and seemed excited at the prospect of having a new addition to our brood, but Aida is down with fever again, with a bit of cough thrown in the mix. I too am suffering from the cough and having a bit of sore throat. Maybe it’s due to the fact that we got it from Syahindah who was ill the previous week and you know it takes a week for the virus to explode in your body once it settles on it.

Anyway, I was enticed to go not for the fact that the good people at KRU Singapore (the sister team of Jihan & Janna) had asked me to come down (I would have even if they didn’t ask 🙂 ), but for the fact that my fave radio presenter, Hafeez Glamour, was the host of the event. It also helped that I did not have my regular football session with my neighbourhood gang today due to poor response. Coupled with the fact that the house chores were done and seeing that Aida is in good hands (since my in-laws are putting up with me), and for the fact that Downtown East is near home, it made perfect sense to see what the hype was all about.

When I reached there about 2:05pm, there was a decent crowd seated in front of the mini stage at the Atrium facing the D’ Marquee. Not wanting Hafeez to see me and putting me in a spot (whether to participate on stage or being interviewed), I stood near the carousel from a distance away just watching the proceedings. I still prefer to remain low-profile when I’m outside. I might be a radio or blogging “celebrity”, but that’s where it all ends when I’m outside and I’m comfortable just being amongst the crowd and enjoying myself without being the centre of attention.

By the time Maya Karin came on stage, the crowd had grown and people were mesmerised by how beautiful she looked in person. I’ve met Maya before at the post-party event after Anugerah Industri Muzik in 2002 and I already knew how gorgeous she was and still is. Yusry of KRU fame, came on about ten minutes later to an even more huge reception and cheers. However, I think I was the most miffed and pissed person when the audience were asked to field questions to the two stars on stage. Why??? Besides the fact that our audience are not a responsive lot when told to do this or that, their knowledge on fielding questions to the two stars were limited to when are they getting married, who are they dating now, who is Yusry‘s beau after Erra Fazira etc.??? Talk about being busy-bodies, only a few asked intelligent questions about the stars’ career path or about the movie, which is sad when we’re supposed to be the ones who are technologically and academically advanced.

So after the short interview session, we had the usual photo-taking session meant for those who had bought the film’s movie vouchers and premiums. I used the opportunity to mingle with one of my cousins who was there because her company was having some family event at Wild Wild Wet. It was there that Hafeez saw me and acknowledged my presence. At first he didn’t specifically point out who I was but then after Janna had rewarded me with a complimentary Duyung Official Soundtrack CD, he used the opportunity to interview me and asked whether I had watched the movie or not. Of course I have not, seeing the whirlwind life I’m having currently but of course, God willing, I will catch it one fine day, sooner if not later, I hope. Which was a bit embarrassing cos all eyes were on me and there was this guy who was pointing out at me and saying, “Oh this is him…” in Malay. Out of courtesy I went up to him and shook his hands.

This photo looks as though I’m hugging her…

I had a pleasant surprise when the event ended shortly after. I was invited to the back by Jihan and Janna so that I could have a so-called private session with the two stars. Which was more than I had expected initially and till now I cannot thank them enough for it, on top of the beautiful gift they sent to us when Syadiyah was born and the complimentary CD that they passed to me. I used the short time to make small talk with Yusry, of course we talked about our favourite team Manchester United and what’s been happening lately in my life. Took a couple of photographs with the man and the “mermaid” (Maya) and they were soon off to catch their flight. But not before the two stars were asked to make an impromptu voice recording for Hafeez‘s daily Bistro programme on RIA 89.7FM. Am quite chuffed at the fact that Maya mentioned my nick (even though she had trouble pronouncing it at first) along with two other famous listeners’ names: “CuteCow” & “Cik Mat“. If you wanna catch it, do listen to Bistro from tomorrow onwards at 10am.

Spent the next few moments chatting with Hafeez, Kak Su (Hafeez‘s assistant), Janna and her parents about the industry, about the Bistro segment and its listeners and of course APM2008. I finally know what the surprise will be at APM2008, which Janna mentioned in my previous entry, if you are reading this from my main domain. All I can say is, I am very happy at the thought of what is going to happen at APM2008 with regards to one of the uncontested categories. It makes me wanna go to the event already. All in all, it was a humble yet successful event organised by KRU Singapore to promote their latest offering. I would have given it full marks had the audience not spoilt it with their nonsensical questions, but I cannot fault the execution and how smooth it went even if the stars were complaining of the humidity when they were on stage.

I’m sure some or even most of you know by now if you had read Berita Minggu today or read the online newspapers in Malaysia or learnt from the Malaysian entertainment blogs, that our Anugerah 2007 winner, Aliff Aziz, has been nominated at Malaysia‘s Anugerah Industri Muzik 2008 which will be held at Putra World Trade Centre on 3rd May 2008. This is by far his most successful achievement to date with all due respect to Anugerah Planet Muzik 2008.

We all know how difficult it is for any of our local singers to make that breakthrough across the Causeway without having to give up their passports. Coupled with the fact that Anugerah Industri Muzik sets a strict policy in only considering albums which are produced mostly by Malaysians (even Anuar Zain did not qualify due to his album’s mostly Indonesian touch), it’s already a win in its own right for our local boy when he was nominated in a very big category: Best Vocal Male Artiste in an Album (Vokal Artis Lelaki Terbaik Dalam Album). Yes, he might not win seeing that he is up against Faizal Tahir, Hazami, Kaer Azami and Sohaimi Mior Hassan (this guy’s a legend!) but his presence alone in this category have shown that it is possible for our artistes to have a crack at the big prizes in store.

Ok I know some industry observers might say, what about Tribe, Urban Xchange, and Zoul who were nominated and won in the past??? No one could take away their mantle as their achievements have been etched, but in terms of vocal prowess in an album, I believe this is the first (M. Nasir doesn’t count even though most of us still see him as one of us) for a Singaporean artiste to make a formal breakthrough. This is most definitely a feather in the cap for Aliff. Add to his 6 nominations at APM2008, I hope his detractors will shut up about his voice being “airy” and “windy”. Just cos one of the dumb Anugerah judges coined those phrases to describe his voice, we seemed to have many parrots jumping on the bandwagon and slating him for it. These achievements are his gifts to all his detractors and whether he wins or not, he is already a proven quality. And I hope it gets drummed into their heads…
