Anugerah Planet Muzik 2018 Media Conference

We’re just a few days away from my annual favourite regional awards event, Anugerah Planet Muzik (APM 2018), and I finally got the time to share what transpired during the media conference which was held on 31st July 2018. I could have posted this entry much earlier but Elit Suria which was more concurrent back then took precedence and I didn’t want to hype this event too early as we were still a good two months away. Anyway, this year marks APM‘s seventeenth edition with the unveiling of notable nominees from Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia and Brunei Darussalam. Once again organised by Mediacorp Suria, Warna 94.2FM and RIA 89.7FM, the 2018 nominees were announced at Orchard Hotel‘s Grand Ballroom with performances by local artistes Farhan Shah, Izat Ibrahim, Liwani Izzati, Firwan Johan, Jagad Edge and Miiko the 13th. An estimated attendance of about a hundred local singers, musicians, producers and songwriters attended the event.

The APM trophies, which go through several revised changes in design and sizes over the years, again up for grabs this year…

What was intriguing about the media conference that day for me was the presence of Mimifly of One Nation Emcees fame, who is now a solo artiste. Seldom do we get a regional artiste attending an APM media conference here in Singapore in years past. Seeing her presence from a distance as I was going up the escalator, was an early indicator of her coming involvement in this year’s instalment. The moment I stepped off from the escalator, I met Ryan Sufiyan who let slipped that he is scheduled to perform with her at this year’s awards show. Instantly I knew that their song “Gila” would be up for nomination for one of the Best Collaboration categories. I guess years of following the event has more or less got me tuned in to the link between performing on the actual night and being nominated. Eventually when the nominations were officially announced, I was proven correct. Speaking of nominations, leading the list is Malaysian-based rapper-songwriter Alif Abdullah of former pop duo, SleeQ, with six nominations. This is followed closely by our local acts Aisyah Aziz and Sufi Rashid, Malaysia’s up-and-coming pop star As’ad Motawh, as well as Indonesia’s pop princess, Isyana Sarasvati with five nominations each.

DJs KC and Dzar Ismail returned once again as hosts for this year’s media conference. They were seen here with Farhan Shah right after his performance…

It is nice to see amongst the list of nominees a mix of young and the more experienced. Who would expect to see a legendary group like Search still churning out quality music in this current age of 90s revival music and social media sensations??? Or Brunei affirming their continued presence in the list with Jaz Hayat once again being nominated since his previous in 2016??? Indeed with the proclivity of social media as a daily staple for most of us, music has found a way for us to appreciate regional talents and for music producers to scout for budding talents. In the case of Bruneians like Aziz Harun and Jaz Hayat, they were fortunate to have Malaysian and Indonesian producers who saw the talent they possess, and now they are reaping the benefits of such collaboration. Which is what the Anugerah Planet Muzik brand is also about, getting to know talents from all four regional Southeast Asian countries, exchanging ideas, networking and eventually collaborating to make more good music for us to savour. As what former Lead of Mediacorp Malay Community, Ms. Zakiah Halim said, “As the only regional Malay music awards event, Anugerah Planet Muzik has always created meaningful opportunities and collaborations between artistes and musicians to raise their profiles in the region. We are proud that the APM 2018 nominees are trendsetters who are pushing the boundaries of creativity in their music.”

Ms. Zakiah Halim and Dr. Edmund Lam, CEO of COMPASS, addressing the attendees of the media conference…

Viewers can expect the hottest music acts and buzzworthy pop culture moments in this year’s APM that will be held at MES Theatre at MediaCorp Campus this coming Friday, 28 September 2018 from 9.00pm. The awards show will be hosted by RIA 89.7FM‘s Fiza O, Malaysia‘s Nabil Ahmad and Indonesia‘s Daniel Mananta. Another highlight of the media conference was the announcement of the performers for this year’s event, where usually they do not announce till much later due to confirmation of artistes availability. This time round, the organisers managed to secure the acts by the time the media conference came about. For the record, Anugerah Planet Muzik 2018 will feature hit performances by Dato’ Sri Siti Nurhaliza who is making a comeback to the event after a three-year break, Dato’ Rossa, Judika, Isyana Sarasvati, Ryan Sufiyan, MimiFly, Khai Bahar, Ayda Jebat, Sara Fajira, DJ Kenny Gabriel, Adrian Khalif, Farhan Shah, Jaz Hayat, G.A.C. (Gamaliel Audrey Cantika) as well as local band The Pinholes. I for one am very much looking forward to seeing the trio of Gamaliel, Audrey and Cantika (G.A.C.) for the first time live as I have been quite a big fan of some of their hits over the past year or so like “Satu“, “Cinta“, “Never Leave Ya” and their debut single, “Bahagia“. I will not be surprised if they are slated to open or end the show with their catchy songs “Satu” and “Never Leave Ya“.

The local artistes, as well as Mimifly herself (front row eighth from right), with a group photograph for memories sake…

Music fans and enthusiasts are also given the opportunity to vote for their favourite songs and artistes in fan-based categories from 31 July to 25 September 2018, 11.59pm on toggle.sg/apm. The categories are Most Popular Artiste (Singapore), Most Popular Song (Singapore), APM Most Popular Artiste, APM Most Popular Song and Social Media Icon. The theme for this year’s Anugerah Planet Muzik 2018 is Tropics / Tropical with the hashtag #TropicLikeItsHot expected to trend on social media platforms like Twitter, Instagram and Facebook, alongside #APM2018 and the returning #GilerTakGerek hashtags which caught on at last year’s event. Suffice to say, the next few days cannot come soon enough and I cannot wait to share with you photographs I will be snapping on Friday itself. Just so you know the usual drill, I will break down my posts and post them in instalment entries so you just have to come here every few days to check them out.

*Best APM Song and Special APM Awards will be announced on 28th September 2018

Piala Dollah Kassim 2012 Media Conference…

Piala Dollah Kassim (Dollah Kassim Charity Cup) returns for a fifth edition this year!!! Due to the overwhelming success of the previous two editions (2010 & 2011), the organisers, Persatuan Karyawan Muzik Singapura (PERKAMUS) has continued to build on the momentum by combining with Composers and Authors Society of Singapore (COMPASS) to stage this year’s event. The media session and drawing of fixture match-ups for the qualifying rounds were held this past Friday evening, 28th September 2012, at the rooftop of Singapore Press Holdings, venue of previous media sessions pertaining to the event. The guest-of-honour for the event was none other than Allahyarham Uncle Dollah‘s son and my cousin, Mohamed Ezaad Abdullah.

This year, the competition welcomes a new team from the Singapore Music Society (SGMuSo), in addition to the four existing teams from Persatuan Dramatis Singapura (Singapore Malay Dramatists Association), Berita Harian, the combined team of PERKAMUS-COMPASS as well as the defending champions, Mediacorp Suria. The tournament promises goals galore and entertainment for the fans. What’s more, the players playing in the tournament are personalities in their own rights. The new kids on the block, SGMuSo, will have the likes of Mel and Joe Ferdinands turning out for them, PERKAMUS-COMPASS will have Jeff Catz, Ikhsan Ace, Didicazli and Syarif SleeQ amongst others, whilst Dramatis will have Roslan Kemat, Amy Kecik, Helmindra J.A. Halim and Khairudin Samsudin amongst others, gracing their team.

As for the defending champions, Mediacorp Suria, who I will be turning out for for the third year running as the team’s goalkeeper, the team has gone through a bit of a transition with at least a third of the squad from the winning team last year not able to make it due to various commitments. The loss of captain and top-scorer Syed Azmir Syed Azman is perhaps the most keenly felt, along with Fauzie Laily, Dzar Ismail, Fadhlur Rahman and Taufiq Salleh, but in their place, the team welcomes five of the “First XI” boys in Muhammad Shammir (Alang), Mohamad Helmi, Mohamed Kiyasudeen, Muhammed Faliq and Muhsin Johari. Abdul Mutalib, who has been turning out for Mediacorp Suria in the previous tournaments, completes the sextet from the successful reality show early this year. The captaincy of the team has been handed down to the most senior member of the team, Rafaat Hamzah.

Guest-of-honour Mohamed Ezaad Abdullah…

I am quite happy so far with what was being briefed during the media conference pertaining to the rules of the event. Prior to the media session, representatives from the participating teams had met up with the organisers and discussed the rules and debating over niggling issues which arose from previous tournaments. I had the opportunity to sit in at one of the meeting sessions and everything was discussed in a very cordial and amicable manner. I am just pleased that some of the unhappiness which I brought up last year in my review of the tournament has been resolved and I am just looking forward to a clean and fair tournament for all. Winning is secondary, it is the spirit of charity and element of fun which we will all be looking forward to the most in this year’s tournament.

Cikgu Yusnor Ef…

Cikgu Yusnor Ef, in his opening speech, threw down a suggestion for relevant authorities like the Football Association of Singapore and National Heritage Board to take up, that is to honour past football greats in any manner possible, so that their contributions will always be remembered and appreciated by the younger generation as a form of inspiration for them to aspire to. This year, proceeds from all the public, individual and team funding will be channeled to the Singapore Children’s Society. PERKAMUS and COMPASS it must be highlighted, will bear the logistics cost and miscellaneous fees. In that respect and echoing their call, I invite you to come down and support the event. This is afterall for an extremely good cause. What’s more, entrance to all the matches is free!!!

This year the tournament will be staged at ITE College East, with the Grand Final on 2nd December 2012. A mini-concert on the day of the Grand Finals will have local artistes performing and a seven-a-side tournament organised by Bikers Aid Singapore. An all-star team from the third, fourth and fifth placed teams will also play in an exhibition match with the Parliamentarian team consisting of several Ministers and Members of Parliament. Unlike previous tournaments, ITE College East is well-equipped in every sense. They even have a cafeteria owned by former international Malek Awab, where watching fans can savour good food at affordable prices. The cafeteria even has prayer rooms for those who want to observe their obligatory prayers. I am certainly looking forward to this upcoming tournament, a chance to showcase our amateur skills to the public and at the same time, contribute to the charity cause and representing my family in memory of Allahyarham Uncle Dollah. Let the games begin!!!

anugeraHitz.sg Media Conference…

The first two months of 2010 have been quite active and hectic months for me in terms of attending shows, concerts and events, besides juggling work, family, social and sporting commitments (no, I’m not an athlete but am working hard to lose weight by either going to the gym or playing football / futsal or swimming almost daily as part of my 2010 resolutions. Heh…). Which meant that this domain of mine have been updated at least once a week by virtue of each event that I attended so far, plus those that I have yet to feature but I try to space them out and publish the ones that take more important precedence first. What has made 2010 even more special for me is the fact that I’ve been invited to attend media conferences like the Suria Elektra event earlier this month and as recently as this past Wednesday 24th February 2010, anugerahHitz.sg at Caldecott Broadcast Centre.

I cannot thank the kind people of Mediacorp Suria enough for recognising me as a credible blogger who blogs on our local Malay entertainment scene. Granted my humble domain is not as flashy as how I would like it to be, given the fact that I’m quite the design and technology idiot, but nonetheless I am forever grateful and thankful that where I lack in creative web / graphics design, I make up for it with factual information and honest thoughts that I could share with my dear readers. It took me about five years to gain credibility, for people to know and trust my product, in this case, my words, and see  that I’m not just running my mouth for the sake of it. I’m not bitter I took this long because anyone can do this themselves, but I believe if one is patient, honest, sincere, genuine and responsible in words, deeds and actions, then the sky’s the limit.

I did mention how small I felt in the midst of all the established media representatives during the Suria Elektra Media Conference earlier this month as I was the only blogger around. This time round, I was joined by two others that I have every single ounce of respect for – Izarr from Izone.sg and Iskandar Saad, otherwise known as Singapore Idol Season Three‘s Official Blogger. Granted Izarr was also at the Suria Elektra Media Conference, but he was there on a different capacity. Unlike mainstream media that chase after ratings, viewers, readers and sponsors, personally I don’t subscribe to that kind of approach when it comes to bloggers like us and am happy just the way I am right now. Maybe it is because I do not earn anything from blogging and most likely will not do so. But there are factors that go way beyond earning something out of what we do for a side hobby.

Each blogger, a local entertainment blogger to be more precise, has his or her own specialty and way of pouring forth their thoughts, whether by design, words put across or the variety of ways in which they colour their blogs. I’m just happy that of late, there seem to be more of us, because we can always learn from one another through what we say and opine. Diversified opinions will give us different perspectives and spectrums, thus resulting in various perceptions and understanding. It is most heartening to see alternative media like us local bloggers being accorded the honour of being invited to cover events as prestigious as these, besides giving our individual takes and opinions on our local Malay entertainment scene. It shows the trust that Suria has on us to help make it even more vibrant than ever.

And what can be more vibrant than anugeraHitz.sg??? It has been a long time coming, too long for our liking. Every year, we had to rely on the “kindness” of the organisers of Anugerah Planet Muzik (APM) i.e. Beyond Events and Mediacorp Radio (RIA 89.7FM & Warna 94.2FM) to set aside local awards presentations during the show. Regular readers of this blog would note that I’ve always been critical of the fact that whenever these awards were presented, the regional audience would not be able to see it and thus would not know more about our talented local acts. My grouse back then was, APM is afterall the brainchild of our people, a Singaporean product for the region and thus we have the means and power to dictate what and how we want it to be, especially when we could include more local acts into the mix.

However, over the years, I’ve come to accept how the system of APM works and it is why the proliferation of a local awards show is much welcomed when we have seen over the past five years, a healthy increase in local acts releasing singles and albums of mostly decent quality and ones we could be proud of as made in Singapore. The advent of reality shows like Anugerah Band and the positive, but constant upgrading of already established ones like Anugerah (the prizes get better every time!!!) have given some of these unpolished diamonds the opportunity and experience to smoothen their rough edges. Even if they did not win the competitions they entered, they came back better and wiser, well-equipped to enter the fray once again or to stamp their mark on the scene.

One shining example I can point out to you off-the-cuff is Fauzie Laily. He entered Anugerah in 2003 but was rather raw and forgettable back then. Two years later, he entered the competition again after gaining experiences on his own accord and he came in third in the 2005 edition. Fast forward to the current times, his stock has slowly risen and we now know him as a talented and versatile singer, actor and host, an almost constant feature on Mediacorp Suria. Success that has gone his way hasn’t changed him one bit. He is still the same humble and down-to-earth person I knew pre-Anugerah 2003. Speaking of which, he has been given the honour to host the inaugural anugeraHitz.sg event along with his Anugerah 2009 hosting partner and RIA 89.7FM presenter, Fiza O. Both of them were also the hosts at the anugeraHitz.sg Media Conference this past Wednesday.

Fauzie Laily and Fiza O, the hosts of anugeraHitz.sg…

anugeraHitz.sg is the first collaborative effort involving MediaCorp Suria, MediaCorp Radio stations Warna 94.2FM & Ria 89.7FM and Composers & Authors Society of Singapore (COMPASS) to honour the best in the local Malay music industry. It will be telecast live from MediaCorp TV Theatre on Saturday, 3rd April 2010 at 8.30pm on Suria. It will also be aired live on RIA 89.7FM. The show will witness the presentation of a total of ten award categories. Like most music award shows out there, a special “Lifetime Music Achievement” award will be presented to a deserving recording artiste / composer / lyricist / album producer who have excelled in the music field. Nominations were opened to singles, EPs or albums that were released in Singapore from 1st January 2009 to 31st December 2009.

Suria viewers have the chance to decide and vote for their favourite artistes through the “Most Popular Artiste” category, while the radio listeners had the opportunity to dictate the outcome of the “Most Popular Song” category via RIA‘s weekly RIA Chartz programme between 1st January 200931st December 2009. How the latter works is through the various songs requested in song request segments like “Laguku” and “Mania Hitz” amongst others. For the “Most Popular Song” category, the nominees will not be revealed and the winners will straightaway be announced during the night of anugeraHitz.sg itself. The local music fans can vote to determine the three “Most Popular Artistes” via SMS to 73388. Alternatively, they can vote through mobile phone and / or landline telephone by Interactive Voice Response System (IVRS). The process of voting to determine the  three “Most Popular Artistes” began on Wednesday 24th February 2010 and will conclude during the anugeraHitz.sg awards show on Saturday 3rd April 2010 at 10:00pm sharp. Each vote costs $0.60. Below is the list of artistes nominated in the “Most Popular Category” also known as “Category 10“, which I’ve taken off the official anugeraHitz.sg site. Credits to them:

The award nominees were selected out of a total of 152 applications, a commendable number seeing how small our local music industry is. They were judged by a host of credible judges which included representatives from Mediacorp Suria, Warna 94.2FM, RIA 89.7FM, COMPASS, as well as Mr Azmeer, an acclaimed Singapore-born singer and composer who made it big in Malaysia and was last seen as the guest judge in the Anugerah 2009 Grand Finals show, Mr Indra Shahrir, a prolific Music Director who had a helping hand at the recent Singapore Idol Season Three competition, and Ms Hartinah Ahmad a well-known writer and lyricist. I’m sure most of you reading this would have seen the nominations list by now. But if you have not, well without further ado, here it is:

Besides representatives from the mainstream and alternative media attending the media conference, the event held at the Mediacorp‘s Multi-Purpose Hall this past Wednesday, was attended by about one hundred artistes, artiste managers, musicians, composers, lyricists and producers, a figure no doubt encouraging for an event that is making its long-awaited debut. Perhaps the downside of it was the conspicuous absence of our two earlier Singapore Idols or their representatives. I dunno the reason why they were not around as they are amongst the major nominees and would not like to speculate on their absence. But I hope no one would hold it against them for not attending the event. Perhaps they had prior engagements that held them back. I believe they would be proud of their nominations and would attend the actual event come 3rd April 2010 either as guests or performers.

Before the nominations were announced, we were briefed on how the awards show was conceived and the quality in standard of the applications received by firstly Dr Edmund Lam, Chief Executive Officer and Director of COMPASS, followed by Mr Ezra Farabi, Assistant Vice-President of Mediacorp Suria and Ms. Zakiah HalimMediacorp Radio‘s Vice President of Malay, Indian & Expatriate Programming. The latter said that there was a distinctive gap in standard between the good and the not-so-good ones in terms of technical aspects like mastering and mixing amongst others, which could be improved on. But overall, the artistes could give themselves pats on their backs for the foundation they have laid to base on and strive even harder to produce better quality singles / albums for future anugeraHitz.sg events.

Leading up to anugeraHitz.sg, there will be a 3-episode programme called “Hitz.sg” on the nominees. “Hitz.sg” will be aired on Saturdays, 13th, 20th and 27th March 2010 at 8.30pm on Suria. The recording of the three-part series will be held this Sunday 28th February 2010 and Monday 1st March 2010. The following are the line-up of the scheduled shows:

Congratulations to all the nominees of the inaugural anugeraHitz.sg, a milestone & landmark event for Singapore‘s local Malay entertainment industry!!!
